2024 Judo Grand Slam Tashkent
Some thoughts on this weekend's events.
This weekend, my intention was to primarily write about the 1st stage of the Ceara Championship. However, my plans took an unexpected turn as there was no broadcast of the event. Thus, instead of detailing the competition itself, I will share insights into the financial challenges surrounding it. Regrettably, our federation's calendar is only released at the beginning of the year. Consequently, there was minimal time between the announcement of the competition date and the event itself. Ideally, we envisioned organizing a convoy of multiple buses, gathering participants from various academies across the region, starting from Juazeiro do Norte and making stops along the route. Unfortunately, this plan never materialized. Even with ample time, executing such an endeavor would have been challenging. Securing a bus solely for my academy was also unfeasible due to our limited numbers. Although we attempted to arrange for a mini-bus, financial constraints hindered our efforts. Ultimately, we endeavored to send at least one athlete to represent us. My friend, Vitória, aged 13, made her debut in the under-15 category this season. Fortunately, this aspect of our plan succeeded. She managed to clinch the silver medal, securing her qualification for the regional Brazilian championship.
This weekend Formula 1 and Formula 2 returned. F1 is depressing with its rules that allow the car that wins one year to win the next year very easily. In F2 Enzo Fittipaldi did very badly. He finished one race back there and retired at the start of the second.
In Counter Strike there was the most important championship of the semester for us Brazilians, "RMR Americas". Qualifying for the World Championship (Major). This video game is the most sporty of video games, even if most 'athletes' and 'managers' don't realize it. Players don't understand that taking care of their body is important in any competition, so we have a huge number of obese and malnourished people, as well as players with serious back problems. But it's competition, much of the essence works in any sport. A player called Kscerato caught my attention saying that training a lot and competing little ends up ruining your confidence. Bringing this to judo, I believe it also applies, but in my current situation without a black belt (mudansha) and without resources, two competitions a year will be very good.
Arriving at the international judo stage that took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. What caught my attention the most was something negative. Athletes with supremacist ideas who do not want to shake hands or hug opponents from hated ethnicities. There is no punishment possible because they bowed their heads to their opponents, and the only mandatory greeting in judo is the bow of the head (ritsu rei). Athletes need to pay attention to this rule to avoid the embarrassment of trying to hug such an idiot. The fighting sport of judo is actually called Shiai. Not every Shiai fighter is a judoka. Because not everyone has the intention of learning the teachings of judo, some fight to defend stupid ideas or just earn to dirty money, obtained through doping and other tricks. The important thing is to improve yourself, winning is secondary. When the priority is to win, cheating becomes an option.
The Uzbek fans, in a very restrained way, celebrated some medals. This time many Olympic and world champions came, mainly from Japan and France.
A Brazilian, Willian Lima, managed to win a bronze medal.
My cuban friend reached the medal match again, but he didn't make it again. This time it lasted just a few seconds. It happens.
Good work, training and studies.
